Leaders in providing innovative sustainability engineering
Solar energy has come a long way in the last few years. A decade ago, the global market was not only small, it relied heavily on governmental support and subsidies. Fast forward to 2019 and the International Energy Agency (IEA) says that more than 115 gigawatts (GW) of solar were installed across the world in 2019. This is more than all other generation technologies put together, writes Tiaan Hendriks, National Sales Engineer at SEM Solutions in ESI Africa.
Interviewed by Engineering News, Tiaan Hendriks unpacks how using microgrids offers an ideal platform for renewable-energy sources, such as wind energy.
First published in Engineering News, this article unpacks how the commercial sector has not fully realised the opportunity that exists to reduce their environmental footprint and save money in the long term when it comes to water use.
South Africa is facing increased pressure on conventional water sources in urban areas. Existing mitigation measures such as increased water abstraction rates, water transfer scheme supplementation and demand side management are no longer effective in satisfying the growing water demand.
A scaled-up deployment of smart water networks will enable South Africa to better manage its water security, writes Dr Andries Nel, Head of Water at SEM Solutions.
Did you know that the national building regulations specify that at least 50% of the annual hot water generation volume be provided by means other than electrical resistance heating elements? Dr Andries Nel, head of water services at SEM Solutions, shares practical guidance on hot water generation in this article published in ESI Africa.
Dr Andries Nel, Head of Water at SEM Solutions was published on Bizcommunity on 6 Aug-giving the commercial sector key insights on the best solutions for heating water.
Water scarcity, both locally and globally are going to shape water management trends indefinitely, says Dr Andries Nel in the article published in Water & Infrastructure Africa on 1 July 2020
Andries Nel, Head of Water at SEM Solutions posits some innovative solutions in this article published in Infrastructure News (online).
Published in ESI Africa in February 2020, this article unpacks energy wheeling as a possible solution to South Africa’s energy crisis.

About SEM Solutions
SEM Solutions was established in 1997 and provides a full Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) solution.
We were awarded the contract for water management on this site in January 2000 as part of a performance contract with the Department of Public Works in Johannesburg. The aim of the contract is to reduce water consumption and to monitor the consumption thereafter. After the preliminary investigation, our report for implementation would include leak detection, pressure control, pipe layout, upgrade of certain fittings, fitting water meters etc.
